We loved book 1 for the most part. Wish they gave more room to work the problems, many times when my child was asked to write the numbers skip counting by 5, etc, there was not enough room, so I drew an extra line below for her to finish writing on. Also, am I wrong to believe that every child coming to 1st grade already knows how to write the numbers 0-20? Don't most 1st graders master writing the basic numbers in K? Since half of this book is made up of a LOT of copying of numbers 0-20, that part was very boring for my child. In my opinion, it is written more for the K level and we used it in the first part of the school year to re-evaluate and repeat what she had learned in K, now we are working from a different grade 1 math book that feels to be more suitable for 1st grade. The good part about this book is that I had my child read the stories from this math book to me for extra reading practice and the stories are cute. The science that is tied into it is pretty cute too, my kid enjoyed it! The best part of this book is the grandma's oatmeal recipe! We cooked it once and LOVED IT, and will never go back to the way we used to make oatmeal before. Final advice is that if your child hates math or did not master all the concepts in K - your will love this book. But for my kid who is very good with math, this book did not offer enough challenge, but did work nicely for going over the things she learned in K before we moved to more difficult math work in a different grade 1 book.

Math Lessons for a Living Education Book 1 Angela O'Dell 9781511930024 Books Reviews

I love this Math series, but unfortunately there are only five books in the series. Very child friendly.
I have 3 daughters that are currently using these books, I absolutely love them. My oldest just turned 11 and is in book 5. I love it that if we need to hurry along they can do one exercise in minutes but if they want to they do more than one exercise and sometimes the whole lesson in a day. They fully understand what they are doing with minimal busy work. I think it is a wonderful curriculum.
Teaching with stories and learning more then counting, place value, addition and such...the book is alive with sweet characters and more! Be prepared for a gentle science lessons or two and for a desire to cook up some yummy food in the kitchen. (Grandma makes yummy meals! My only complaint is that the recipes are not included.) 😁
Totally disappointed. I read a review that said this curriculum was good for children with Autism. It is not! The program does go off the Charlotte Mason approach but the level one book alone would have pages and pages of nothing but small print words. There was no room for the child to complete the work on the page and because it is in black and white and the pictures often look like they were printed from a home printer on the fast setting. Instead of having a dog with two puppies and both puppies completely visible it had one puppy where all you could see what the back of it! Then it would ask questions about the puppies. Nonsense. It was way way too complex and ridiculous at times for a beginner. We returned it.
I was so excited to use this, but ended up disappointed. As a whole, we made it work. But there isn't much room for for the kindergarteners to write with their awkwardly large handwriting. Also found some errors in the directions (or lack thereof--what are "right-brain flash cards"? She never explains, but instructs for you to make them!) Also sometimes things were misaligned. We ended up skipping a lot, especially the copywork.
My son who is almost 6yrs has autism. We deal with a lot of noncompliance issues in a lot of areas and getting him to focus and do school work is a nightmare. I learned very quickly that he needs a Charlotte Mason method. He needs to see how things can be applied immediately to real life or else it will not hold his attention at all. I love how the math problems are based on this story that follows through the whole book. And there is plenty of repetition for him. It might be too redundant for some but for him it is perfect. He is retaining the information. The lessons or exercises or pages are short and sweet and simple if not crude black white illustrations. Nothing fancy here. Just a decent story line that helps the children with math. The story so far is about two kids going to Grandparents farm and how the farm is organized with rows of vegetables in numbers. That is how they introduce numbers. The kids have a turtle and they have to make a box bed for it and they introduce rectangle. There are definitely references to God/Christianity--haven;t seen Bible verses yet but the use of God.
